'America's greatest gift to Israel'

As the country's founder and first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, once declared, "America's greatest gift to Israel was Al Schwimmer." Joining the Haganah, Schwimmer discovered, wasn't as easy as just strolling through the door. "He felt he had to do his part in creating a Jewish state, so this could never happen again," Schwimmer recalled. Rather than melt down the surplus weapons for scrap, Liff told Greenspun to take as much as he wanted — free of charge. In 2001, at the urging of Brian Greenspun, Schwimmer received a presidential pardon from Bill Clinton.

The synopsis reads: "Jennifer has created a narrative-driven, cinematic original which showcases her journey to love through her own eyes." The "Argo" star had titled the letters to Lopez "The Greatest Love Story Never Told," which is where the documentary gets its name. “There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no ‘Barbie’ movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film,” Ryan Gosling said. Her first three films as a solo director — “Lady Bird,”“Little Women” and “Barbie” — have all been nominated for best picture. One likely factor: the increasingly international composition of the film academy. After Ben Affleck went unnominated for directing 2012's “Argo,” voters rallied around his movie, ultimately handing Affleck the Oscar for best picture. Whether the same effect could follow “Barbie" will be one of the biggest questions leading up the Academy Awards.

Peter Tarnoff, a seasoned diplomat whose work behind the scenes for presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton included establishing a secret channel to Fidel Castro and helping arrange the escape of six U.S. Embassy officials from Iran, an escapade later depicted in the 2012 movie “Argo,” died on Nov. 1 at his home in San Francisco. His wife, Mathea Falco, said the cause of death was complications of Parkinson’s disease. Mr. Tarnoff was part of a cohort of Foreign Service officers who, inspired by the words of President John F. Kennedy, joined the American diplomatic corps in the early 1960s. Many of them cut their teeth on assignment in South Vietnam, and several — among them Mr. Tarnoff, Anthony Lake, Frank Wisner II and Richard Holbrooke — went on to play leading roles in the U.S. foreign policy establishment. But while outsize personalities like Mr. Holbrooke, a frequent contender for secretary of state, and Mr. Lake, a national security adviser under Bill Clinton, became famous, Mr. Tarnoff preferred to wield his influence out of the public eye.

Robotaxis are autonomous self-driving cabs which require no human interaction to operate the vehicle. When did driverless cabs become a reality? Cruise followed with its first driverless ride service last year in San Francisco, and slowly expanded to include Phoenix, Arizona, and Austin, Texas. The use of driverless cabs also raises the prospect of job losses and could attract pushback from unions. Regulatory hurdles facing robotaxisCommercializing fully autonomous vehicles, especially robotaxis, has been harder than expected with tough regulations, complicated technology and heavy investments forcing some to cut jobs.

Western demand for commodities on the other hand has been seen hurt by the lagging impact of interest rate hikes. “You can’t deny that commodity prices have come off a fair bit from where they were, (but) they are still pretty healthy, the iron ore price in particular,” Forster said. Inflation is also expected to raise the floor for commodities prices, including copper and iron ore, BHP said, seeing prices for the latter trade around $80-$100 a ton. BHP produces iron ore in Western Australia for $17.79 a ton.

SAN FRANCISCO, July 6 (Reuters) - Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) said on Thursday that it plans to launch autonomous, or self-driving, vehicles for ride hailing and goods delivery services in Austin, Texas by 2026. The company took over nearly 100 people from Argo, as well as its hub in Austin where Argo was testing autonomous vehicles. "The big aim is that we bring fully autonomous vehicles to the market as a commercial, scalable product," said Christian Senger, a Volkswagen board member who oversees development of autonomous driving. Volkswagen joins GM's Cruise and Alphabet's Waymo in testing autonomous vehicles in Austin, Texas, known for the least restrictive regulations on self-driving cars. But Tesla, Cruise and Waymo and other firms have missed their targets to launch self-driving cars and their vehicles have had difficulty in handling rare and unforeseen driving situations.

OpenAI's buzz has a lot of tech workers eager to join the generative AI company. "Other than them I can't think of any other prominent company adopting this model at this scale," Musa said. Signing bonuses are very rare; there is no target performance bonus; and there is also little to no room for negotiation on compensation, Musa and another person familiar with the company said. All of those things are standard with other tech companies, from startups to Big Tech firms like Meta, Google, and Microsoft. BERLIN, May 9 (Reuters) - Porsche (P911_p.DE) will incorporate automated assistance and navigation functions from Mobileye's (MBLY.O) so-called "SuperVision" technology platform in future models, Mobileye said on Tuesday. The agreement is the technology provider's second large signing for the platform with a major automotive group after China's Geely (GEELY.UL). Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, which was previously going to use technology from Pittsburgh-based self-driving startup, Argo AI for self-driving shuttles and vans, will also partner with Mobileye, a spokesperson said. Volkswagen pulled out of its planned investment in Argo AI last October and said at the time its commercial vehicles unit would seek a new partnership. Together with Mobileye, the unit will seek to implement so-called "Level 4" autonomous driving - considered fully autonomous, though humans can still request control - in its ID.
